BlackBerry 10 and BlackBerry OS Services – End of Life

On January 4, 2022 (at 11:59 pm PST), BlackBerry will decommission its legacy services for non-Android BlackBerry devices (i.e. devices utilizing BlackBerry 10 OS, BlackBerry 7.1 OS and earlier, and BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.1 and earlier).

BlackBerry has advised that the functionality of devices (and services) using these versions of BlackBerry software will no longer be reliable for all users worldwide. This includes talk (including 9-1-1 calls), text, and data functionality. The extent of service unreliability for affected users will be unclear until the decommission date but it is highly likely that impacted devices will be unusable. BlackBerry has provided additional details on the planned decommission on its website (https://www.blackberry.com/us/en/support/devices/end-of-life) and advises consumers that they should contact their service providers for more information.

Since at least June 2021, Canadian carriers began efforts to notify impacted customers and to advise them to take action to prevent loss of service – e.g. by switching their SIM to an alternate device in their possession or acquiring a new device. Subscriber outreach will continue through Jan 4, 2022. If you are a user of an affected BlackBerry device and have further questions, please contact your service provider.
