Mobile Giving Foundation Canada Partners with the UN World Food Programme on Monthly Text Message Donations to Help Feed the World’s Hungry

OTTAWA – September 13, 2012 – The Mobile Giving Foundation Canada (MGFC), in collaboration with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), is pleased to announce that donors can now make a monthly recurring donation of $5 via text message to help feed a hungry child for a month. WFP, the largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide, is the first of the charities registered with MGFC to implement this monthly recurring gift option.

“Through the text-to-donate recurring donation, the Mobile Giving Foundation makes it even easier for Canadians across the country to make a real difference in a child’s life,” said Nancy Roman, WFP’s Director of Private Partnerships, Public Policy and Communications. “Five dollars feeds a hungry child in school for a month, and changes her life forever. Through millions of these small, recurring transactions, together we can solve hunger.”

As with all donations made through MGFC, the amount donated by text is charged to the donor’s wireless phone bill, and is billed as a tax-exempt transaction. The wireless carriers then remit 100% of the funds collected from mobile donations to MGFC, who in turn remits 100% of this amount directly to the registered charity.

“The extension of mobile giving to enable a monthly recurring donation is the next step for charities in the evolution of mobile giving”, said Bernard Lord, Chair of the Mobile Giving Foundation Canada. “The positive response to mobile giving continues to grow and we couldn’t be happier to have such a great partnership with the United Nations World Food Programme.”

To donate $5 to the World Food Programme, text “WFP” to 45678. Once you initiate and complete your one-time $5 gift, you will be presented with the option to make a recurring $5 donation to WFP every month. The $5 donation will cover the cost of feeding a hungry child for an entire month, giving them the opportunity to grow, learn and dream of a brighter future. Visit www.wfp.org for more information.
