Giving Back to Your Favourite Charity is Just a Text Message Away

Canadian Cell Phone Users to Give Like Never Before on GivingTuesday

OTTAWA – November 28, 2013The Mobile Giving Foundation Canada, the mobile channel that enables Canadians to donate to their favorite charities via text message, encourages Canada’s 28 million mobile phone customers to participate in Canada’s first GivingTuesday on December 3, 2013. Building on the tremendous success of the first GivingTuesday in the United States last year, GivingTuesday Canada, to be held each year on the day after Cyber Monday, is an opportunity for Canadians to give and volunteer their time to their favourite causes at the start of the holiday season.

Earlier this year, the Mobile Giving Foundation Canada (MGFC) joined with 12 other caring Canadian organizations as founding partners of GivingTuesday, which was initiated by CanadaHelps and GIV3. To date, more than 800 other organizations have joined this movement for charities, companies and individuals to share their support for and raise awareness about charities and non-profit organizations they are passionate about.

“Canadians are known around the world for their generosity, and I am confident that GivingTuesday be no exception to this,” said Bernard Lord, President and CEO of the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association. “In just the past three years, Canadians have donated close to $2 million through text-to-donate programs.”

MGFC, which is utilized by approximately 150 Canadian registered charities, provides an easy way for mobile phone users to donate small amounts – $5, $10, $20 or $25 – with a simple text message. For GivingTuesday, more than 30 charities are participating in special GivingTuesday mobile giving campaigns. These campaigns also allow donors to share their charitable support through social media to help spread the word about their favorite causes.

About the Mobile Giving Foundation Canada

The Mobile Giving Foundation Canada (MGFC) was founded in 2009 to create a “mobile giving channel” that empowers non-profit organizations and donors. MGFC provides the organizational layer, operational guidelines and technical infrastructure for registered charities and donors to use the incredible power and convenience of mobile technology. The mobile giving channel gives Canadians a simple and immediate way to respond to appeals from worthy causes and have their donation charged to their wireless phone bill. 100 per cent of the donation is then remitted to the designated charity. Mobile giving campaigns are supported by Bell, Fido, Koodo, MTS, Rogers, Solo, TELUS, Videotron, Virgin Mobile and WIND Mobile. For further information, please refer to the MGFC Web site at
